Right off Puerto Rico’s east coast you can find one of its most beautiful natural wonders, the Bioluminescent Bay Laguna Grande located in Las Croabas, Fajardo. Also known as the Bio Bay and sometimes called the Bioflourescent Bay, this ecosystem is known for its unique “glowing” characteristic fascinating visitors since its discovery by the Spaniards in the 17th century. The Spanish conquerors referred to the reservoir as the “devil’s” glowing water. This amusing phenomenon which makes the bio bay so inviting for curious tourists is caused by its oceanic residents, known as dinoflagellates (a type of plankton also known as fire plants), who have the ability to light up in the dark. Due to increased urban developments and deficiency in ecological regulations the few places around the world which were categorized as bio bays are loosing their luminous characteristic.
Bioluminescence is a very special occurrence in a fragile ecosystem which needs strict requirements for its luminescent microorganisms to stay alive and active. The mangrove trees surrounding the bay supply various nutrients and minerals from their roots, as well as decomposed foliage, that promotes the dinoflagellates survival. Also the different canals that connect Laguna Grande bay with the ocean influence the climate and temperature within the lagoon. But the most important factor that has prevented the bio bay from loosing its “glow” is the efforts the DNER (Department of Natural and Environmental Resources) of Puerto Rico on maintaining the lagoon’s vitality.
The Laguna Grande bioluminescent bay is one of three bio bays that are scattered all around Puerto Rico and is the second best preserved after Mosquito Bay in Vieques. It is also one of the last that remain on the planet. If you would like to have an “out of this world” experience book your Bio Bay Kayak Tour or Bioluminescent Boat Tour today.
